PHL Justice Department forms IAUs in National Prosecution Service

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday formally created nationwide Internal Affairs Units (IAUs) in the National Prosecution Service (NPS).

The NPS is the government’s main prosecution arm. The creation of the IAUs was made with the issuance of Department Order No. 768 dated Aug. 11, 2011.

DOJ Secretary Leila De Lima says that this is a first and significant step for the Department in pursuit of its core mandate to deliver justice for all. It must begin within – we must rid ourselves of misfits in the service.

The issuance provides for an IAU for the Office of the Secretary, the Office of the Prosecutor General and 14 regional IAUs.

Prior to this, extensive consultations and review by senior officials were made on the global best practices in the establishment of IAUs.

A Manual for Prosecutors was published outlining the IAUs. An inventory of pending administrative cases have also been completed.

“We heed the call of the President (President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III) for a clean and transparent system of governance specially in justice sector agencies,” De Lima said.
